What is a diagnostic test?

A diagnostic is a test performed by a technician to determine the condition or problem with your vehicle. Some diagnostic procedures take longer and cost more than others. Some are mechanical, electrical, visual and audible. For instance, if the cars computer turns the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light, a code is stored in the computer’s memory (PCM Powertrain Control Module). This code points to a problem in one or more of the vehicle’s systems. The service tech interfaces the shop’s diagnostic tool with the cars computer, retrieves the code and determines what caused the condition/s that set the code by testing and analyzing the system for faults. (IT IS NOT SIMPLY RETRIEVING THE CODE/S) This can result in mechanical and electrical diagnostic testing.

Mechanical diagnostic is when there is a problem that may or may not be visible. There could be an unusual noise or a change in vehicle handling and control. Sometimes disassembly of a suspected part may be necessary to confirm the problem.

Electrical diagnostic is when an electrical system fails or the SERVICE SOON LIGHT is turned when a sensor detects a system problem. This could be the result of either electrical or mechanical failure. For instance, the knock sensor hears a mechanical noise and set a code or a wheel sensor turns on the ABS light.

A proper diagnostic will save time and money when performed properly. Changing parts rarely works and can prove very costly to the owner.

How much is a diagnostic?

$37.50 for a computer scan or just getting the codes and description for the codes when the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light is turned on by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module or computer). The code retrieved from the PCM gives the technician a direction to start looking for a problem. It tells which system is having a problem but it does not tell what the problem is without additional testing.

$75.00 to $150.00 for a complete diagnostic, which includes the computers scan and a comprehensive diagnostic of the cause of the code which could take from one to 2 hours labor. Intermittent problems could cost $75.00 to a maximum of $300.00 no matter how long it takes us.

Diagnostic processes sometimes will fix the problem. Usually it just let us know what needs to be done. DIAGNOSTIC IS NOT INCLUDED WITH THE LABOR unless the problem is corrected during the diagnostic process.

Your vehicle may be left at our facility for repairs 3 days after the diagnostic and an estimate has been given to the owner. The vehicle can stay longer after the bill is paid, but House Calls For Cars will not be liable for theft, vandalism or any loss we did not cause.

If after 3 days, no decision is made to do the repairs, the vehicle will need to be removed or $15 per day storage will be added to the diagnostic charge. No. All charges must be paid when the vehicles are released. We have too many problems collecting payments.
